Painting EP by COMOC

COMOC is one of those artists whose style is not easy to pin down. One thing that is clear about his musical endeavours - experimentation is always at their heart. His intricate take on footwork is truly unique. Over the past few releases of his own he has crafted a zany sound, full of unexpected twists and turns, which lays somewhat closely and could be compared to IDM by some; frantically chopped samples, tumbling percussion, tuned vocal samples and freaky sounds appearing out of nowhere are all components to his quirky sonic canvas which he is well known for.

"Painting", his latest offering expands on the ideas grounded on his earlier recordings, albeit they're taken to a whole new level. The material is undoubtedly his strongest to date, and the producer himself seems to be well aware of the fact. "The man to beat me hasn't been born yet" are the opening lines to "Don't Make Me Laugh", a track which puts the aforementioned movie dialogue together with a funky guitar lick and mind-bending synths over ever-changing drum patterns reminiscent of the pioneering works of the Chicago footwork forefathers. "Murder" is an interesting take on the now-classic Ini Kamoze sample, which was utilized by Damian Marley on the hit song "Welcome to Jamrock", and then again in "Out in the streets" by Africa Hi-Tech (which was also a footwork tune). COMOC bravely takes the instantly recognizable sample and twists it into something that only he could create. Apart from controlled psychedelic madness that will surely appeal to the fans of the so-called braindance scene there are moments, where the Poznań-based beat maker lands on more melodic grounds. Closing track "Smoking Room" is the best example, with it's beautiful sampled strings and sung vocals the track doesn't slow down the paste at all though, filling the earlobes hard with syncopated 808 drums, making it arguably the strongest cut on the EP.

This is another hard-hitting release in the Polish Juke catalogue, where COMOC skillfully blends the bizarre and the beautiful into a slightly challenging yet highly rewarding listen, the EP that cannot be easily overlooked.
