Afterlife (Album) by Maxx Silver

"Afterlife" is an album of contrasts and contradictions. The first half of the album has 5 tracks which are relatively upbeat musically but lyrically explore some serious subjects. The songs have conflicting elements within them, like some internal, musical battle between positive and negative. The second 5 tracks are darker and more experimental.

The catchy "When are Hills Mountains?" addresses how we interpret personality in the style of a sing-a-long pub knees up in a Bavarian pub. Its about the potential end of a friendship, and missing that person. "I Never Knew It was Possible" is a euphoric and romantic song, with a muted drum and bass style, strings and the lyrical declaration "If you really want me for the rest of my days, I'll be the best of myself share with you so many ways"

"I Don't Have To Put Up With This Anymore" is the walking out the door song, finding a new start. It is written for anybody thinking of escaping a bad relationship and the lyrics explain a situation I knew about although, not personally. "This is Your Life ( Don't Phone It In)" is about trying to function whilst suffering from depression "Look at all the things that you do in this state, you are a hero then don't hide away" It is encouragement to someone stuck in a situation they want to try and change for themselves.

The first side concludes with "You're Not Mr Wolverine" It seems like a novelty or joke at first - but isn't. Lyrically is about a village who cannot wait to get rid of the political leader ruling over them "when your gone we're having a party" so that their land is "for ourselves" It also refers to the second page of artwork which portrays the Ladin community carnival costumes. The Ladin people live in Italy and keep their own language and identity in just a few valleys within the Dolomites. In short, this jokey song is about self determination.

"Afterlife" kicks off the second half of the album. Wonky, spooky electronic hip hop influenced tune about making the most of today. Inspired by the artist Quadeca, who influenced me on this and some other tracks from his album "I Didn't Mean to Haunt You"

Followed by the gothic rock of "Dark Times" which laments "When is the day we get back how it was?" "Things that I 've go to get used to" is resigned, but hoping for a better situation in life.

"Cyclogenesis" the longest track, muses on both climate change and religion asking "Where is the Heaven?" in its second part after its clanging dissonances. The album comes to a close with the bleak atmospheres of "Chasms" which seems like a very firm conclusion.

I also include a dance (haha) remix of "Wolverine" and an instrumental version of "Mountains"

I really wanted the songs on this album to say something and to tell stories, relate to real life situations. But I wanted it to be entertaining, varied and melodic and to provoke a bit, not to be a bland listen. I listen to this album often and find some comfort within it. I hope you do too. And for reference only, this music was not composed with a computer but mostly with fingers, without Autotune and with no AI (its banned!)
