Joya by Josi Costi

Joya is my debut album, recorded to tape with close friends in the living room of my sister’s house in Richmond. For ten days we turned that space into a studio, filling it with guitars, pianos, bass, percussion, and the sounds of the house itself — wood creaking, footsteps upstairs, birds outside the window. All of it found its way into the songs, because it felt true to let the environment be part of the music.

The album is a search for voice. After years as a pianist and collaborator, I needed to step away from the polished life of a session musician and reconnect with the raw energy of songwriting. These songs are imperfect, analogue, and alive. They live in the space between memory and nature, silence and friendship, loss and joy.

Produced with Tal Janes, mixed and mastered by Brett Shaw, and played by longtime friends who know me better than anyone, Joya is a document of friendship as much as it is an album. It’s about the quiet strength of small moments, the things you only notice if you’re awake enough to catch them.
