光 (Pre-Version) by Ian Hawgood

The final mix of '光' involved the use of a wall of various reel-to-reel machines alongside my faithful digital Nagra recorder. My typical approach always take months usually as I mix and blend these alternate recordings to get the tone I am happy with, and I will typically use elements of different machines across a whole album.

My favourite version of the mix was done on a very worn and decayed Revox PR99 which bubbles and snaps tapes at will, but I adore it. '光 (Pre-Version)' is the version of the mix that was recorded onto this directly with no post-editing at all. Unlike other albums I have made, I have returned to the various recordings of '光' with a great deal of affection, and it is this version that I keep coming back to as it is so natural and warm.

This hasn't been mastered, cut into separate tracks, edited or cleaned up in any way, and I wanted to share this with friends who picked up the vinyl release as a special bonus. I make no apologies for the warble and analog-stuttering here as I am sure you will notice, and hope you, dear listener, can get even closer to the nature and life of these recordings, and hear the soul in these wonderful old machines that bring me so much joy.
