Deep Cuts by Gavin Castleton
Deep Cuts is a Halloween-themed collection of fan-fiction songs, covers, and remixes that I’ve created over the past decade. It includes tributes to some of my all time favorite horror films and TV shows, such as Jaws, The Shining, Midsommar, Halloween, Scanners, Possessor, Twin Peaks and Atlanta. Some songs provide a backstory for a film’s supporting characters, such as Delbert Grady in The Shining, Quint in Jaws, and Pelle in Midsommar. I love the challenge of introducing motivations and context while respecting the source material. Some songs are my attempts to bridge two related films. In Exorcise Me, I mapped out a plausible timeline of events between David Cronenberg's 1981 cult classic "SCANNERS" and his son, Brandon Cronenberg's 2020 thriller "POSSESSOR.” In Smith’s Grove, I have 1978 Halloween’s Dr. Loomis cautioning 2020 Halloween’s Dr. Sartain against obsessing over Michael Meyers.
As a writer and superfan taking liberties with someone else’s characters, I spend weeks obsessing over the canonic details and really enjoy providing easter eggs for other superfans. I also engross myself in the music of each film, reinterpreting and incorporating my favorite melodic elements.
Note: many of these songs were released on a prior compilation called #deathed, but they have been remixed and remastered for improved quality and cohesion.
